<p> However, the only thing that can accompany you wherever you go is self-help books, and there are many available on the market by renowned authors. Since the problems of low self esteem are not predominant in America alone, but all around the world, it should not be too hard for you to get your hands on a good self-help book, wherever you may be.</p>
<p> Self-help books need not always be on increasing self esteem directly. One look through a book shop&#8217;s self-help section will show that you can buy books on hobbies like photography and cooking, and on personal help like doing better at relationships and at work. All these will however help you with better self esteem in the long run. So, there is a self-help book for you, whatever the goals that you set for your self may be.<br /> As human beings, we are superior to all other living things on the planet and one of the things that prove this is our ability to effect change on our surroundings. So do get a self-help book on whatever it is that you would like to change, and put what you learn from these books into affect.</p>
<p> Soon you will see a positive change in your life, and the feelings of accomplishment that come with this can work wonders for your self-image. So many self-help books have been published to date that it is not a problem finding one on whatever topic you may have in mind. <p> Self-help books are a great thing to carry if you travel a lot. Not only do they help you pass your time constructively they are easy to carry and store. <p>In this day and age the internet is full of resources that display techniques and methods of self help and positive thinking. What many these resources donÂ´t mention is the tactics of self talk, this has to be a unique method when it comes to self help, and especially positive thinking. The mind is a very powerful thing and we will only ever get out of it what wee put in, or what we let others put in â so it remains vital that we use self talk to input some real positive thinking and vibes in order to maximize our self help efforts.</p>
<p>In general when we think of self help techniques, or positive thinking techniques the self talk tactic is very often overlooked and underestimated, and many people find it difficult to have the confidence in their own beliefs and feel they must here the encouragement from others, and this is a primary mistake. By talking things over with ourselves it helps us better know ourselves, and the situations we find our self in and therefore find easier, and better solutions. To ensure self help we have to ensure positive thinking, and to ensure this we must encourage ourselves and not wait for others to do so.</p>
<p>You will find that by understanding and learning the self talk method that you will soon be reaching levels of self help that before were unobtainable and that your positive thinking attitude exceeds what you were expecting â this is the reason we say that many overlook and underestimate this tactic of self help. To succeed in whatever we do one must believe in ones self, and to do this we must be thinking positive and encouraging our self â therefore self talk will become a daily part of your life, as will success.</p>

<p>Why Self-Help Materials Often Fail To Help</p>

<p>Marriages and relationships are difficult for many of us. Their prospect is so full of the expectation and promise of fulfillment, love and happiness. Often their beginnings appear to be living up to these dreams, at least for a while. But once these relationships begin to fail, to show signs of disappointment, there is quite often very little that many couples can do to reverse the decline. Some couples, finding their marriage in decline, promptly decide to end their relationship and to seek the promise of happiness elsewhere. Others attempt to resolve their problems with the help of friends, a therapist or clergy. Still others attempt to straighten out their differences alone or with the assistance of self-help books, videos and seminars. Those who choose to consult popular self-help materials often come away disappointed as their relationship continues to fail. Today, we will be exploring several of the reasons why traditional self-help materials are often ineffective in improving or repairing a failing marriage.</p>
<p>Our discussion will be focusing on three problem areas common to most, if not all, popular self-help materials and will proceed from the least to the most restrictive reasons for their failure.</p>
<p>To begin I would like to mention that my partner, Jeane Cordingley, PsyD and I love to read self-help books. She got me started on them shortly after we met thirty some years ago. From this beginning one of the features to be found in many of them immediately drew my attention. This feature was the inevitable chapters that titled their contents in list form, such as: &#8220;10 Sure Fire Methods of Reigniting the Passion in Your Marriage&#8221; or &#8220;Five Steps to Better Communication&#8221; and another good one, &#8220;Three Things That Every Woman Should Know About Men&#8221;. Now while it is true that there are methods that will increase or return passion to some couples. Just as there are things that partners can do to gain a better understanding of their mate thereby improving their ability to communicate with each other and certainly there are things that every woman should know about men. However, such generalities are often of little value when trying to fix a failing relationship.</p>
<p>Your relationship is the combination of two unique and special individuals, each equally deserving to give and receive love. There is no one else in this entire universe quite like either one of you and when you met and formed your relationship it, too, became instantly one of a kind. Therefore its improvement or repair requires, in addition to an equal effort on both of your parts, methods, steps and answers that are tailored to fit your unique situation. Such insights can only come from you and, sadly, popular self-help materials fall woefully short of inspiring them in their readers when all they have to offer are generalities.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Also, the healing arts are not exact sciences in any way as are physics, chemistry and mechanics, for instance, regardless of how much their practitioners would like them to be and psychology is among the &#8220;fuzziest&#8221; of the healing arts. This is not to say that psychological insights and the various &#8220;talking therapies&#8221; are ineffective. In a great many cases they are very effective, providing needed help to over 80% of those who pursue this course of treatment genuinely. The point I am trying to make here is that there are no hard fast rules when it comes to applying help to something as unique and complex as your marriage. So when a self-help author offers you; &#8220;3 Sure Fire Ways To…..&#8221; these ways are unlikely to provide you with any tools that will actually help you improve your relationship in any lasting, meaningful way.</p>
<p>In our discussion so far we have learned that generalities form the first reason why self-help materials often fail to aid those who wish to improve or repair their troubled relationship. Now let&#8217;s move on to examine the second aspect of this failure which involves the nature of knowledge itself.</p>
<p>All self-help materials, books, videos, seminars etc. strive to give you knowledge. This knowledge may be presented in many forms, ranging from folksy popularizations to serious academic presentations, and covers a wide range of topics which reflect the diverse nature of psychology. The way that knowledge is offered only presents a problem when the author&#8217;s presentation is beyond the comprehension of the material&#8217;s intended audience. So the source of the problem we are about to explore lies elsewhere.</p>
<p>Knowledge consists of information; it is the accumulation of information that itself is based on the past experiences of others. Therefore, knowledge is always in the past and deals with the previous experiences of strangers in their own unique circumstances. This is why knowledge alone is quiet &#8220;dead&#8221;, by which I mean that it has no power or ability to bring you the transformative insights you require to improve or repair your relationship.</p>
<p>Love is not knowledge. True, real love is not simply the remembrance of past events, past experiences and past pleasures. This is why knowledge alone, which is constantly based in this past framework, will not solve your relationship problems. If it did then everyone who held an advanced degree in psychology would be blissfully happy and we all know that there are many, many miserable shrinks.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>When self-help materials offer their readers or viewers knowledge solely as their &#8220;active ingredient&#8221; for dealing with their intended problem they are destined to fail. This is especially true in the area of relationship improvement and repair where any problems that exist between a couple are compounded by the fact that there are two people involved rather than the single individual that therapists are accustomed to dealing with. This is not to say that information which leads to knowledge is useless, I merely mean to point out one of the reasons self-help materials offer little help to those who seek to save their marriages. When considering the role information and knowledge might play in your attempt to help your marriage it may be useful to remember that information and knowledge form a part of a larger whole that is commonly known as wisdom. Wisdom is a hierarchy:</p>
<p>Information → Knowledge → Understanding → Awareness.</p>
<p>From this progression you can see that information leads to knowledge which in some people inspires understanding which, in turn, can sometimes lead to awareness. Awareness differs from mere information and knowledge and even understanding as we are about to find out.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve arrived at the third, last and possibly most limiting major failing of self-help materials. It concerns the fact that most, if not all, popular self-help materials fail to provide you with some form of empowering practices, exercises or disciplines that will enable you to apply the knowledge you have gained through reading or viewing them in a way that will fix your relationship. To better understand this concept let&#8217;s return to our hierarchy of wisdom. In traditional western education you learn that the goal of acquiring knowledge is to lead to understanding, as our graphic shows. This understanding is then demonstrated in grad school when you write your dissertation and defend it. It is your understanding that empowers you to defend your work. But this purely academic demonstration is the limit of the empowerment that understanding alone usually conveys. This is why I said earlier that simply possessing an advanced degree in psychology will not give you the tools necessary to improve or repair your own relationship. This is why there are so many unhappy couples who also happen to be psychologists and psychiatrists.</p>
<p>Returning to our hierarchy you will see that awareness follows information, knowledge and understanding. This is not an automatic progression and often does not take place. However, when it does awareness grants active mastery over one&#8217;s inner life and its problems. This is because awareness is a living, dynamic, expansive form of consciousness. When one wields it they are easily able to correctly assess their personal situation and those of the people closest to them and to formulate answers that are specifically tailored to fit their individual and unique needs. It is this active nature of awareness that will provide you with the solutions to your relationship problems. When two people acquire awareness and apply it to their marriage it is soon on the way to becoming a Perfect Relationship, sadly, however, the majority of today&#8217;s self-help materials fail to provide this vital ingredient.</p>

<p>Without providing you with a way to gain awareness, something that is also lacking in our system of higher education, popular self-help materials widely available both at cost and for free have little chance of providing you with any assistance with your relationship concerns whether they originate during dating, in the early stages of courtship or once the relationship / marriage is formed. Examples can be given of self-help legal practice, homespun advices and many more. In course of time self-help books are leading guides in the field of education as well as business. Psychology plays an important part in the writings of these self-help books. These books have led to self-help movements. </p>

According to prominent psychiatrists the self-help books are quite distinct from the professional counterparts. The latter cannot provide friendship, emotional prop up, first hand experimental knowledge, self-identity, roles in life with a meaning and above all a sense of being belonged. Self-help books links people with any kind of health condition. It is especially applicable to those who are mentally unstable. However everything does not work for everyone. The same applies to these self-help books. People going through similar travails form lobby groups and by sharing problems many knots are untied. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill also hit the market inspiring people about the power of thought. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>The Role of Brain Fitness in Self Help Programs</strong></p>
<p>Do a search on the internet for self help programs and prepare to be amazed. I am a self help guy from way back too, and I am amazed at all that is available for purchase.</p>
<p>You can find a self help site for anything, I think, which is a tribute to both American ingenuity and marketing.</p>
<p>We seem to be adept at finding a problem and creating a program to solve it.</p>
<p>The problem with some of our self help programs is that sometimes they are very light weight, implying that a solution is very easily achieved in the very short term.</p>
<p>When I think of self help, I think of Alcoholics Anonymous, or Narcotics Anonymous, or Cocaine Anonymous, or I think of the market for weight loss, or divorce or marriage or relationship aids, anger management, or an emerging market in regards to brain fitness.</p>
<p>All of those programs involve regular practice of certain behaviors, and there are three behaviors we humans can hope to manage or control, our thinking, our feelings, and our behaviors, or how our body moves.</p>
<p>If you have read Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi&#8217;s book FLOW, which is treatise on the psychology of optimal performance, then you know that we process sound, visual, touch, smell, and taste information at the rate of seven bits of data every 1/18th second, so self help programs need to be learned and implemented in a very short period of time. (1/18th second is twice as fast as I can blink my eyes).</p>
<p>Self help then must be a process of awareness and management of sensory processing done very quickly and very frequently.</p>
<p>I liken the process for my anger management clients to steering a car, you make thousands of small adjustments to the position of the vehicle on the road, and are paying attention to hundreds of variables at a given moment, traffic in front, behind, traffic lights, children, the policeman six blocks ahead, ect. As you do this, you keep the vehicle going in the direction you want, at the speed you want, in a safe way for yourself and other drivers. You avoid potholes.</p>
<p>So the process of self help must be similar, and involves first your awareness and attention and perception which can only happen in your incredibly fast brain.</p>
<p>Can you imagine paying attention to your attention?</p>
<p>Put it another way, awareness gives me choice.</p>
<p>So self help programs at their most basic are going to give me the ability to choose a new thought, which will lead to a new feeling, which may motivate a different behavior, and this is all going to happen thousands of times per minute in my very fast brain, just like I make many small adjustments to the steering wheel of my vehicle.</p>
<p>Remember that neurons can only do a couple of things, move electrical energy and neurotransmitters, which leads to all my choices, including a very basic cognitive behavioral tool/rule.</p>
<p>Change the thought to change the feeling.</p>
<p>Any self help program is going to give me new thoughts to think about this certain issue.</p>
<p>I need to practice this thought to make them a habit, so the new habit is stonger than the neural habit previously established (think codependent behaviors, for example) and then the new thought can be recalled in an 1/18th second in an emergency, and by that I mean that I recall my new thought to replace my problem thought very fast.</p>
<p>So self help as I am describing it begins with an awareness of how your brain sustains memory, and calls it up. It is very similar to the process you use to steer your car. Certain thoughts are a habit.</p>
<p>Change the thought to change the feeling, and the problem behavior does manifest, because I have changed the thought before my body could move.</p>
<p>So How Do I Increase my Awareness of My Thoughts?</p>
<p>Let me recommend some self help tools which have been very useful to me.</p>
<p>What makes self help the most effective is not effortful striving, but relaxation, believe it or not.</p>
<p>Stress hormones like adrenaline or cortisol were designed to help me prepare my flight of fight physiology for that 1/18th second when I perceived danger (happens in the brain!) and needed to run for my life, fight for life, or freeze to keep my life. When that physiology comes on line, I have only those three behavioral options. And every time my problem thought emerges, since it is now part of a pattern I am trying to change, I will create stress, which makes it harder for self-help to manifest.</p>
<p>Very hard to brainstorm solutions from the stress physiology, so calming down is the way to create self help program mastery.</p>
<p>Deep breathing for a period of time is the best and cheapest self help tool available for us humans, and if you are like most adults, you will nod your head in agreement and continue to breathe very shallow in your chest, which generates that pesky stress physiology.</p>
<p>So try the a heart rate variability program to learn how to contact the self help brain in your heart. What you will do is the first right thing for any self help program to be effective, which is relax, and not just in the moment, but on demand. Heart rate variability biofeedback is learned because it is a biofeedback process, and after a bit of practice your body will learn to stay much closer to this new baseline. A coherent heart rate will open higher perceptual centers in your brain where you will continue to think the thoughts associated with your new self help program, whether it be AA or your favorite weight loss program.</p>
<p>The Best Brain for Self Help</p>
<p>I am not aware of any self help creators out there that are taking a close look at how brain fitness impacts self help success.</p>
<p>We can now do a great deal to make our brains fit and healthier, which is where self help happens.</p>
<p>Not too long ago, no one knew how plastic our brains were and are, how my neurons are connecting and establishing those new habits.</p>
<p>(Neuroplasticity happens in minutes, not hours, days, weeks, or months).</p>
<p>If you want an excellent resource for brain fitness, then read Brainfit for Life by Simon Evans,Ph.D. and Paul Burghardt,Ph.D. who are neuroscientists at the University of Michigan.</p>
<p>They provide a huge amount of easy to digest information about how to get your brain fit for self help.</p>
<p>They discuss the &#8216;pillars of brain fitness&#8217;, physical exercise, nutrition, (incluiding omega 3 fatty acids) sleep, stress management, and challenging learning experiences including using computerized brain fitness programs.</p>
<p>The other aspect of brain fitness for selp help is neurogenesis, or the daily growth of new neurons if I do not have toxins like stress hormones or ethyl alcohol in my brain too frequently.</p>
<p>Novel learning experiences enhance neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.</p>
<p>Very useful brain fitness programs which I have used? Programs involving research about the dual n back task, or Michael Merzenich&#8217;s neuroplasticity research are excellent.</p>
<p>Self help programs have been a huge part of my life, and I continue to try them out when I am convinced that there is some research to back them up.</p>

<p>Several writings and works of literature have emulated the concept of self help in the past. In fact, the stoic and the Islamic scholars advised others in a manner, so as to help people help themselves. There have also been several illustrations on self help in modern literature.</p>
<p> Self Help Mediums : There are various mediums that can provide self help to an individual. It also involves a certain amount of motivation and inspiration that the group or the individual needs in order to improve. The basis for any sort of self -help lies in knowledge gained through experience, self dependence, and self identity. Besides this, a certain amount of emotional support and a sense of belonging also encourage the need for self improvement in oneself.</p>
<p> There are several groups that one could choose to be a part of in case one needs any sort of encouragement. Some of these groups also help us learn about the various techniques that can be used for self help.</p>
<p> Some of the primary groups include family, friends, peers and other groups that include significant others.
